12 miles of splats

Birthday run with the gang at Patapsco State Park outside of Baltimore. Six of us ran; one of us rode his mountain bike. Foxes, deer, happy dogs, gentle hills, wooden bridges, a waterfall, colorful trees, bright blue skies. Very slow and chatty. Then to Fells Point in Baltimore for oysters, burgers, and beer!

6 miles of splats

Pre-dawn shod run with G in Rock Creek Park in the rain. First dark trail run for me. Tried out a fancy hand-held torch (gift from K) and G's headlamp. Eerie and fun. But couldn't figure out why my feet felt so squished. Did my shoes shrink? My feet swell? Ah, yes. It's because I got used to blissfully easy running in VFFs. My feet felt encased in pillowy lead bricks.

Longer solo VFF run in Rock Creek Park. (Not sure exactly how long, but 10 sounds good.) Smells of BBQ in the air. Felt more like a spring day than an autumn one. Ran the hills and avoided the roads. Met lots of dogs.

Solo VFF run from my apartment through the shorter Rock Creek Park loop. Gorgeous day. Ran the hills for a change. Veered onto the road for the last couple of miles to see if I could make friends with the asphalt. (At the Schloss last weekend, I stopped running when I hit the road. Hate roads.) Found a couple of fast guys to catch up to. Then got stuck & ended up running the rest of the way with them. Way too fast for me. But exhilarating.

My third 50K, fifth ultra, and longest run to date. After a 2:30 am wake-up, K & G and I headed out to West Virginia for The Big Schloss and its 6,000 ft of total elevation gain. Hot blue skies, golden leaves, small evil rocks, hand-over-hand rock-wall scrambles, Elvis- and hula-girl-themed aid stations, and a cold mountain lake for body dipping at the end. I believe at some point I expressed the certainty of imminent death

We need to figure out something for those blisters.

Rancho San Antonio Rogue Trail
Again, I accidentally went up the shallower direction and down the steeper. However, my new KSO Treks allowed me to navigate the descents without issue. Of course, this route was mostly wider paths and fire roads so they didn't get a real workout.
I felt like I was struggling a lot, but I think that (mostly) slow uphill grade for the first 3 miles does a number on you.
Also, I'm pretty sure I was probably going too fast at times as the average speed seems high (4.5mph) given the amount I know I was walking. The majority of 2 minute running segments were in the 8.5m/mile range, so yeah, that's too fast.
Overall, a tough day - bad traffic to get there, mucho blisters/cuts from new shoes, mostly boring route, etc.
Still, the view from the top was great and the shoes shouldn't hurt as much the next time. :)

Very nice. I haven't been since last Wednesday, so I'm glad it's not a competition. :)

I did get my new KSO Treks in the mail today, so hopefully I'll have more grip on the ascents and descents as well as a slightly less foot bruising. Hopefully, I can try them out in the morning.

Trail running should be measured in mud splatters, not miles.
